O goodness is there some Newton skeptics out there. Before his MVP season, Newton was viewed as a descending prospect who was going to run less and couldn’t make the required throws to turn his team into a Super Bowl contender. Onto 2017, Newton is recovering from shoulder surgery and again there are talks of Newton running less. I think this is going to happen. The additions of McCaf and Samuel signal a transition to a short passing game for small yardage versus Newton creating with his legs. This will cap his ceiling a bit, but he’s certainly startable. There’s some risk with Newton, but he’s as tough as they come. He’ll probably teeter around the top 10, but lack the polish of many of the game’s elite. Now the highest paid QB, it’s time Carr started playing like one. He’s expected to lead the Raiders into a deep playoff run, somewhere they haven’t been since their Super Bowl blowout loss to the Bucs. It could have been different last year if Carr didn’t break his leg week 15, but so is life in the NFL. Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree make for adequate weapons along with an elite offensive line. The IFL has completed its two biggest events during the off-season, the Rookie Draft and the Veteran Auction. With that said, how did each team manage use these events to better their rosters. We (Nils and I collaborating again) developed three categories in which a team could fall into:
Improved – The GM has acquired talent this off-season, building upon where the team left off in 2016. To earn this rating, the team improved their weekly scoring potential by an estimated 16+ ppg.
Sustained – The GM has acquired talent this off-season, but the acquisitions aren’t projected to make a dramatic change to their roster from the end of last season. To earn this rating, the team may have increased their weekly scoring potential by an estimated 8 ppg or less.
Declined – The GM has gone backwards this off-season. Whether it was intentional or accidental, they are heading into 2017 with much less potential than they had at the end of 2016. To earn this rating, the team may have decreased their weekly scoring potential by an estimated 16+ PPG.
When we look back at Drew Brees’ career, how will we view him? Does he belong in the all-time greats’ conversation? He’s won a Super Bowl, MVP and has passed for over 5,000 yards 5(!) times. No one else has done it more than once. Onto the 2017 season, Brees is locked in as a top 3 fantasy option. Routinely overlooked as an elite option for fantasy productivity, he’s one of the safest bets to produce, especially when he plays at the Superdome. He’s infamous for his home/away statistical split. That’s not to say he’s a bad QB on the road, but there was only two home games where he didn’t throw over 300 yards. He’s set it and forget it.
